Today marks the ninth anniversary of World Password Day. Having strong passwords is more important than ever before in the digital era. So much of our information lives on the internet. From online banking accounts, bill payment websites, eCommerce websites to social media, all of these sites need passwords to get access to our sensitive data.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are 4 password best practices that can help prevent being hacked or security breaches:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Make each password more complicated and longer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When it comes to securing your accounts, both the complexity and length of your passwords are important. It makes passwords far more difficult to guess at random. Each password you generate should include upper and lowercase letters, numbers, special characters, and symbols. You should also avoid using popular phrases or personal identifiers (such as date of birth) to create new passwords.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Keep track of your passwords with a password manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As it is recommended to use distinct password for different accounts, the average person can have about 100 different passwords for the various tools, apps, websites, and online services they use on a regular basis. The days of writing passwords on stickies are long gone. A password manager helps you remember all of the numerous password combinations you use on the internet. It may also encrypt passwords to create an additional layer of protection.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Use multi-factor authentication<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Microsoft, 99.9% of threats to passwords can be stopped using multi-factor authentication (MFA). Having strong passwords alone is not enough. Implementing MFA provides an extra layer of security by making users confirm their identity after entering their username and password.\u00a0 It can take several forms, such as a unique code sent to the user\u2019s phone, email address, or a quick fingerprint scan. MFA is highly recommended and an effective way to keep cybercriminals from gaining access to passwords through third party online systems.<\/span><\/p>\n
