How to Transfer a Domain

An authorization code (also known as an EPP code or transfer code) is a unique code required to transfer a domain name from one registrar to another. You can obtain this code from your current registrar.
No. You only change who the domain registrar is when you switch. All names stay the same.
  • Step 1: Unlock Your Domain
    First, log in to your current domain registrar’s account, locate the domain you want to transfer, and ensure it’s unlocked (not locked by the registrar or by client settings). If the domain is locked, you need to unlock it.
  • Step 2: Request an Authorization Code
    After unlocking your domain, request a domain transfer code (also known as an authorization code or EPP code) from your current domain registrar. This code is necessary to verify your identity when transferring the domain to a new registrar (like Dataplugs). You can obtain this code through the registrar’s website, customer service, or support page.
  • Step 3: Submit the Transfer Request
    Once you have the transfer code, log in to your Dataplugs account (register if you don’t have one). On the Dataplugs domain management page, find the domain transfer option, fill in your domain information, transfer code, and other necessary details, and then submit the transfer request. This step usually involves paying the domain transfer fee.
  • Step 4: Await Domain Transfer Approval
    After submitting the request, Dataplugs will send a transfer request to your current domain registrar. The registrar will verify the transfer code and check for any conditions preventing the transfer (e.g., unresolved disputes, outstanding payments). If everything is in order, the registrar will approve the request and transfer domain control to Dataplugs. This process may take 5-7 days, depending on the processing speed of both the registrar and Dataplugs. Once the transfer is complete, you can manage your domain in your Dataplugs account.
Domain transfers typically require the following:

  • The domain has been active for more than 60 days.
  • The domain’s expiration date is at least 15 days away.
  • The domain account has no outstanding payments.
  • The domain holder’s identity is valid and free from disputes.
A domain transfer cannot be applied for under the following circumstances:

  • The domain was registered/transferred less than 60 days ago.
  • The domain’s expiration date is less than 15 days away.
  • The domain has outstanding registration fees.
  • The domain is under review by a judicial authority, arbitration body, or domain dispute resolution body.
  • The domain name is transfer-prohibited (e.g., clientTransferProhibited / serverTransferProhibited).
The domain transfer time depends on several factors, but typically takes 5-7 days from submitting the application to completion. However, the actual transfer time may vary; this is for reference only.
During a domain transfer, if the domain name is not expired, website access is usually unaffected. However, you may not be able to modify DNS or resolution settings during the transfer. Once the transfer is successful, you can update the DNS and other relevant settings as needed.
Domain transfer failure may be due to the following common reasons:

  • Failure to pay the required domain transfer fees on time.
  • The original registrar rejected the transfer application.
  • The domain is in a LOCK or HOLD status.
  • The domain is in a dispute period.
  • The transfer code is incorrect or was not submitted correctly.
  • The domain name is in a transfer-prohibited status; contact the original registrar to change the status.
You cannot renew for more than 1 year during the transfer, but once the transfer is completed, you can add additional years (up to an extra 9).
